Welcome back! Asheville Sandwich Company is a small restaurant in downtown West Asheville on Haywood Road that does not get spoken about often but, I think deserves recognition. West Asheville is a growing area known for its food and Ashevillian atmosphere. Other restaurants in that area include Biscuit Head, Sunny Point Cafe, and Dobra Tea. While I don’t usually like to make the trek to West Asheville because I live far from that area, it’s worth it for the food at Asheville Sandwich Company.
While the outside of this shop isn’t very impressive, their food is outstanding. It’s clear by its name, that Asheville Sandwich Company offers a wide range of sandwich options from the classic BLT to Spicy Chicken, and Crispy Fish (my personal favorite). Asheville Sandwich Company also offers vegetarian options. The best part, however, in my opinion, is the crispy shoestring fries that they pile on top of each sandwich. The fries piled on top of the sandwich make for a filling meal that is well worth the money. For the amount of food that you are getting, it is quite the deal, with each sandwich costing around ten dollars.
I always order the Crispy Fish sandwich. It is a fried white fish with vinegar based coleslaw and a spicy sauce on a buttery bun, topped with crispy shoestring fries. I like to add ketchup on top as well and on my fries. If you like coleslaw and seafood as much as I do, you will love this sandwich. If you are interested in dessert, they also offer huge brownies and chocolate chip cookies.
As for the atmosphere, it’s very “Ashevillian.” It is pretty small inside, but there is an outdoor sitting area. It is covered in cool bumper stickers and is very quaint. The service is wonderful as well. I truly have nothing bad to say about Asheville Sandwich Company and hope that you choose to check it out because it is such a hidden gem in the Asheville area! I also hope to see you next month for another edition of 828 Hidden Gems.
