Welcome back to another 828 Hidden Gems! Unfortunately this will be the last of them, as I am getting out of school for the summer this coming Wednesday. Downtown Asheville is filled with cool places that few people know about. In previous blogs we’ve visited C&Co and Takosushi, both in Downtown Asheville. Right down the street from those places is Mountain Madre, a Mexican restaurant, which I will be talking about in today’s blog.
When I first walked into Mountain Madre, I saw tons of paintings by local artists and artsy light fixtures. The service was immediately welcoming and it had a great atmosphere. The overall vibe was very Ashevillian, which gave me high hopes.
For an appetizer I ordered the chips, queso, and guacamole. All three were outstanding and came to the table almost immediately. The entree was just as good. I ordered two fish tacos with a side of mexican rice. The fish tacos were battered and fried, and topped with arugula, corn salsa, and a spicy sauce. The tacos were probably the best fish tacos I have ever had! The mexican rice was pretty average but still good. It was cooked with spices that gave it a good flavor.
While the food was great, there are some drawbacks. I have tons of Mexican restaurants around my house so I don’t know how often I will actually go to Mountain Madre. I also don’t live very far from the Downtown area, it always takes so long to fight the traffic and find a parking spot. Although I love Downtown Asheville, this does deter me from going sometimes. Overall, I loved Mountain Madre, and I think it is a great place to go on special occasions. I will definitely be going back and I hope you choose to check it out as well!
