Chorus teacher Aleisa Baker was surprised today as the February Mix 96.5 Teacher of the Month. Radio hosts Tammy Jones and Dex Mitchell came to Roberson to interrupt Baker’s Advanced Ensemble class and awarded her the prize, which includes a $100 Visa gift card from 96.5, a $100 gift card from Alan’s Jewelry, a one-hour massage and one-hour facial from Massage Envy, a $100 gift card from Chop House, and a $100 gift card from Lulu’s Consignment Shop.
Sophomore Daniel Lowman nominated Baker for the award. According to Lowman, he wanted Baker to see how much of an impact she has on the students.
“I’ve only had her for two years now, and already the amount of opportunities she’s given me to better myself both onstage and in a choral setting, I just wanted to be able to give that appreciation that I have back to her, and I thought that this would be a good way to do it. I just wanted to make sure that there are people who appreciate what she is doing for us every day,” Lowman said.
In his nomination, he wrote “Coming to school everyday and getting 65 teenagers to sit up and play nice is a huge feat by any means. But what sets Mrs. Baker apart is her ability to make us feel like a family. She helps us all come together to create beautiful music, while holding both us and herself in high standards,” said Lowman.
Baker had no idea that she was receiving the award, and was moved to tears. The Advanced Ensemble preformed a song for Tammy and Dex as well, as a thank you for all she has done.
“I was really happy to see that she was surprised,” Lowman said. “I didn’t know beforehand, and I was scared that she might have known, but after seeing her face, I could tell that she was really surprised.”
