Hey friends!! This past week in church the sermon really stuck out to me, so that’s what I’ll be writing to y’all about today. The sermon title was “Jesus is greater than our heroes” focusing in on the Hebrews 2:10-18.
The first question my pastor asked me and the first question I’m going to ask you guys was, “What defines a hero?” Ironically, we had just answered the same question in English class on Thursday, so the definition flowed right into my head. A hero is someone who is brave, who leads by example, who lives unafraid.
The second question he asked was a little more difficult for me to answer. And so after he spoke “who is your hero” into the microphone at 9 o’clock on that Sunday morning, I froze. I thought back to the definition I had just given a few minutes before and started juggling names in my head. As an athlete, hands down, Lindsey Vonn is my hero. Her story is incredible and she embodies everything I strive to be as an athlete. But it felt weird to me to write someone’s name down that I had never met, so I kept thinking.
I finally landed on someone. Someone who shows me what a life loving Jesus looks like daily, someone who has a heart to serve. Seth Hutzler is the guy who seemed to fit the hero definition most closely in my head. He is someone that has constantly pushed me to seek the Lord and just really love life.
I’ll go into more detail on Seth and my friendship next blog post, so stay tuned. But I’m gonna focus it back directly on the title of the sermon. “Jesus is greater than our heroes” because Jesus is our greatest hero. Every characteristic of a hero fits Jesus perfectly. Every action we expect from heroes, Jesus fulfills. Jesus saves us and shows us a better way. Jesus shows us victory and trust. Jesus is our greatest hero because he is always next to us. That statement is huge for me. He does not fail us and sits next to us even in times of temptation.
So in conclusion, yes we all have heroes (I encourage for you to try and name a few). As athletes, we look to the pros for inspiration, to witness greatness and realize the possibilities. Odell Beckham Jr., Mia Hamm, Jordan Spieth and Lindsey Vonn are all people deserving of admiration and it is appropriate to aspire to accomplish their athletic success, but Jesus is THE most deserving of admiration. Jesus is the example of a perfect life and who better to follow than that.
I will continue my testimony in the next post so once again, stay tuned!! I hope these first two months of the new year have been awesome for y’all.
As always, Make Him the Glory of Your Goal 🙂
