Since the creation of YouTube in 2005, the platform has built up a network surpassing one billion users as of 2017, according to the Huffington Post. Over the past 10 years, YouTube has become a port for stardom, initiating relationships with the undiscovered and those searching for “the next big thing.”
YouTube has been a catalyst for bringing big stars such as Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Tori Kelly, The Weeknd and many others into the spotlight. One day they were regular people making YouTube videos and before they knew it they were being nominated for and even winning Grammys.
Not everyone that posts a singing video on youtube will end up famous, but the stories of those who have been successful inspire others to put themselves out there, like local rising star Daree Wynn, also known as 828trig (TRiG Films). Daree uses Youtube to share his self produced rap songs and videos with viewers,
“People are more attracted to visuals than just sounds,’’ Daree said.
Trig uses Youtube to provide easy access to his latest songs and videos. His videos maintain a minimum average of around 1,000 views and at maximum have reached to almost 10,000.
“It’s just another platform to spread yourself to the world,” said Trig.
Youtube is not only a way to be discovered, but users are actually able to make profits off of there videos by monetizing them. Setting up videos to be monetized occurs through Youtube’s “Creator Academy”, a website that shows the simple step by step process to activate your account. While activation is simple, making a profit does require significant popularity.
“Typically it takes millions of views to actually gather a large amount of money I haven’t looked into monetizing yet,” Trig said.
New or budding monetized users will start out small, but a handful of users, including Liza Koshy, use youtube as a main source of income. Koshy’s net worth as of 2018 is an estimated $2.5 million according to Forbes and Rolling Stone. Other users who rely on Youtube for their main source of income include Lilly Singh with an estimated $2.5 million, Jake Paul with $11.5 million , and Jenna Marbles with a six figure income (possibly several million) according to Forbes and Rolling Stone.
According to Youtube’s qualifications for monetization, it takes thousands of views to make a profit. The profit is based on the ads that play before or during the videos. The more ads present in the video, the more money that user is making.
It’s not about the money for everyone. Youtubing is considered a hobby for some, allowing them to utilize their creativity and extra time to create something of their own for everyone to see.
“It’s exciting to think about the possibility of someone coming across your videos and catching their attention,” Madison Bode, junior and youtuber said.
Bode’s posts are shared merely to express her love for singing and show people what she can do. Though Bode has not looked into monetizing her videos due to her experience with Youtube being more of a hobby when there’s time available, editing her videos for the viewers pleasure is just as important.
“It takes around an hour to edit my videos depending on what they are.,” Bode said.
For Trig, editing videos typically takes a bit longer. Combining his audio with video and special effects is “a process”, but once he has an idea in mind for his final product, no time is wasted.
“Shooting my videos usually will take two to three days as far as editing goes. I just lock in and get most of the video and editing done within a day or two once I start I just like to keep the flow going,” said Trig.
“I really just enjoy using youtube all together. It’s a fun hobby I hope to keep up and expand my chanel,” Bode said.
