Roberson’s men’s soccer team has secured the 4A state championship title and now assistant coach Josh Martin can finally shave. He had been growing his beard for the extent of the team’s playoff “run.”
Martin, who has been coaching for 12 years, says the playoff beard is a tradition among soccer and hockey players.
“I have always gone through the playoffs without shaving,” Martin said. “During the playoffs a beard takes a different significance; it shows how far your team has come.”
“My beard is especially long this year, which is a good thing because it shows how far we have come,” Martin said.
The team defeated Sanderson High School from Raleigh 2-1 tonight on NC State University’s fields in the championship game. Senior Cam Wood and junior Alex Lewis both had goals.
Roberson has made the state playoffs 31 times previous to this year.
According to head coach Rob Wilcher, he could not be more proud of his team.
