Hey guys, happy March! It’s almost spring, and soon we will be yearning for summer. In this blog post, we are going to step back into the colorful 1980s! The 1980s was a period notable for the funky, hip fashion that young people rocked. From leg warmers, to gigantic hoop earrings, to geometric patterns, this period was iconic. Even today, things like scrunchies, bell-bottom jeans, and turtlenecks are coming back into style!
First up, let’s talk about shoulder pads! Shoulder pads created the illusion of sharp, clean silhouettes. Shoulder pads were often worn with suits and sweater dresses. They were a statement because they screamed of women equality. Women could finally have as much prominence as men did in their clothing choices.
Next up, we have gym wear. Nowadays you often see ladies sport a variety of leggings, athletic jackets, and so on. But did you ever wonder when it became a fashion statement? Well you guessed it, the 1980s! It was during this time period that fitness videos became popular, hence everyone wanted neon leg warmers, elastic headbands, and leotards. Pop culture also aided in the success of athletic clothing. We still see this trend in 2018 by how brands such as Lululemon sell a variety of colorful leggings with all sorts of unique patterns on them. Even New Balance sells retro sneakers that mirror those in the 80s.
Finally, we can’t forget the accessories of the 80s! Whether it be hair scrunchies, big earrings, or slap on bracelets,
people’s personalities could finally shine through. Scrunchies became popular because they helped keep poofy hairstyles tamed. Plus, they didn’t leave crimps in your hair. A variety of colors was also offered through these accessories so people could coordinate their everyday outfits with them. Anything augmented could automatically change the direct focus of a look.
Well’s that it for now! See you all next time.
