Goodbye 2016, hello 2017! A new year, a new news cycle.
2016 has been a whirlwind. My mind scrambles trying to remember all that has happened. It’s truly been a rollercoaster of a year. And at the end of the day, we’ve often been left sitting on our couches, staring at the TV screen in disbelief as it blares the nightly newscast. The twists and turns are depicted right in front of our eyes.
But now, we all look onward. What’s going to happen in 2017? The scenarios are endless, especially with the incoming Trump presidency. Will he uphold his foreign policy promises? Will he deport millions of illegal immigrants? How will he handle diplomatic relations with countries in which tensions are rising? What about our favorite pop culture icons? What will be the new celebrity gossip of the year? The questions are endless, the possibilities are endless, the news coverage is endless.
As 2016 ended, we were were left reflecting on the tragic deaths of Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds. Memes had taken over social media in the last days of December, asking 2016 to just be over already. Not the best way to end the year, to say the least.
Hey, but here we are…back to the present. We made it, folks! 2017! To start the year off on a good note, I’ll start with one of the more encouraging stories that is dominating headlines — the definitive progression in punishing Russia for their alleged election hacking. And yes, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that they did indeed interfere in the election. If you don’t believe me, check out the numerous amounts of evidence the C.I.A. and other intelligence agencies have provided as proof.
For those who have been living under a rock (or just refusing to watch the news in hopes of staying carelessly content in this new year), let me give you an update on the situation. President Obama ordered sanctions against Russia, expelling 35 Russian diplomats. A step in the right direction. However, nothing is certain as Trump enters into office in several weeks. With his incoming administration’s loose ties to Russia, who knows what could happen. In the meantime, Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that he will not retaliate in any way. Not yet, anyway.
As the year began, the 115th Congress met for the first time on January 3rd with a strong conservative agenda on their hands. And they will finally have what they want — a president who will back up their plans. Among the expected actions Congress will make, the repeal of Obamacare is at the top of that list. But the big question remains. What will replace this healthcare legislation? Anything could happen with this overwhelmingly Republican House and Senate. 248 Republicans vs. 192 Democrats in the House. 54 Republicans vs. 44 Democrats in the Senate.
I think my new motto for this year is ‘only time will tell.’
To wrap up this blog post, I wish you all a happy and healthy start to 2017! I know sometimes it may become hard to keep up with the news with most of it entailing tragic and heartbreaking events, but it’s crucial to stay informed. Make it a New Year’s resolution! And remember…Even though the party hats and 2017 glasses have been put away, don’t lose that excitement about the new year. Be enthusiastic about this year and all it may bring!
Happy 2017! Tune in for my next post soon!
By the time you next hear from me, we’ll have a new commander-in-chief. Attached is a picture from Trump’s rally in downtown Asheville that I covered for our class. What a crazy experience…I’ll have to blog about that in a future post. Until then, bye for now!
