At the end of March, Young Life club was held at the Orange Peel located in downtown Asheville for a tacky prom to take place.
It turned out that my grandparents from South Dakota were coming in to visit the day before tacky prom so my grandma was able to bring one of her old bridesmaid dresses for me to wear. You could say the dress was a little bit out of style. It was a long flowy royal blue dress that was a little big on me, so it didn’t look the best but it worked.
This Young Life tacky prom took place on Tuesday and started at 7 p.m, and because it was a school day I had track practice before, and then I had to rush from practice to go get ready at a friends house. We all had to get ready in around 30 minutes and everyone was struggling to find a dress that fit them so they wouldn’t be so uncomfortable the whole night.
We got there fashionably late, but everyone was still waiting outside the Orange Peel. It was funny to see all the people’s reactions who walked by because they had no clue what was going on. A few asked about it, but most people just walked by and gave us a few weird looks.
When everyone ran inside, there was a table of food and snacks, music playing, and a photobooth with props. Around 15 minutes after we got there they started the concert. There was a bunch of throwback music being played.
They played a range of music, like the Cupid Shuffle, Macarena, The Chicken Dance, Juju on that Beat and others. The dresses were really hard to dance in because they were a little tight, and everyone was sweating a lot. But did you really have fun if you weren’t sweating by the end of it all? That’s how I look at it.
Young Life Prom was a really fun event that I recommend them doing again in the future. It’s fun to be with all the clubs in the area and get to meet new people and have fun; it was a night where everyone just had fun for a few hours before they had to go to school again the next day.
Near the end of the concert, everyone started going home because many of the people couldn’t drive past 9, so around then is when the prom was about over. But before everyone left, all of the Asheville Young Life clubs took a picture together in the photo booth, and snuck a cookie or two before they left.
